An NBFC lending platform has to do two jobs at once: run the loan book day to day, and produce a record that survives scrutiny. Plenty of systems do the first. The second is where most fall short.
The lifecycle it has to cover
Enquiry, application, credit assessment, sanction, disbursement, servicing, collection, closure — with the audit trail retained at each stage. If any step happens outside the system, on a spreadsheet or on paper, that is the step that will be questioned later.
Asset classification and provisioning
This is the clearest dividing line between a lending platform and a loan tracker. Classification should be derived from the live repayment position, and provisioning applied from rules you configure. If your team assembles classification separately at quarter end, the system is not doing the work — your staff are, and the numbers will drift.
Bureau integration
Credit bureau access is contracted directly between your institution and the bureau. No software vendor can sell you CIBIL access. What the platform should do is connect to it once that agreement exists, and store the pull against the application so the assessment record is complete. Treat any vendor claiming to provide bureau data themselves with caution.
Multiple products on one customer master
Most NBFCs do not stay single-product. If vehicle loans, personal loans and gold loans each need their own system, you will have the same customer three times, and consolidation becomes a monthly reconciliation project. One customer master with several loan products is a structural decision worth making early.
Questions to ask before signing
- Who migrates the existing loan book, and what happens to part-paid accounts?
- Can we configure a new loan product ourselves, or is it a change request?
- What does the audit trail record when an entry is corrected?
- Which reports come as standard, and which are billable?
